60 x 40 landscape of a heavily-wooded area in Central NY. The evolution of this painting is a long one: it was five years or more after I first saw this place before this piece came into being. There is a literary history behind this one, besides the existence and history of the actual place (which is real), involving two pieces of literature. One is obvious, the other is a long story, or rather a short story. The original is designed to hang a foot or so from the floor, creating an imaginary, door-sized "portal" through which the viewer can imagine stepping into another, wilder, world. It's more complicated than that, but that's enough for now.
Self-taught artist. Learned mostly from doing and from looking at other artists' paintings (or reproductions of, in books and magazines), and from looking at the world around me. My artistic heroes are John Constable, Winslow Homer, Charles Burchfield, Rockwell Kent and Edward Hopper. Live in upstate NY. Paint mostly landscapes, most of which are upstate NY scenes, although not all. I'm a regionalist, I guess. Sometimes I paint animals, both wild and domestic. Work in various art mediums, primarily acrylics, pastels and watercolors - just beginning to experiment with oils and alkyds.
